Reasons Women Choose to Get Breast Implants

  • Many women undergo a cosmetic surgery because they want to feel better about their overall physical appearance.
  • Mostly, women choose to have breast augmentation cosmetic surgery in order to improve their self-confidence. Some of them feel dissatisfied because their breasts never developed to the size they expected, while others want to bring balance to a breast that is somewhat smaller than the other.
  • Very often women also want the breast augmentation procedure so as to restore their natural breast volume, which may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, and aging or even breast cancer surgery.

Breast Implants Characteristics

Choosing to have cosmetic surgery is an important decision that needs to be carefully made.  As breast implants will drastically change your appearance you need to understand a few important things about the procedure prior to moving forward. In order not to regret this action, it is good to know some of the basic characteristics of breast implants themselves.

The primary parts of breast implants are:

  • shell (envelope or lumen)
  • filler
  • patch to cover the manufacturing hole

There are two types of breast implants:

  • Saline

-          3 kinds of saline breast implants are available:

* Single lumen implant filled during the operation with a fixed volume of saline through a valve;

*Single lumen implant filled during the operation with a variable amount of saline through a valve;

* Single lumen implant that is prefilled by the manufacturer with a fixed volume of saline;

  • Silicone Breast Implant

-          The three types of silicone Gel breast implants are:

* Single lumen implant prefilled by the manufacturer with a fixed volume of silicone gel;

* Double lumen implant with: an inner lumen prefilled by the manufacturer with a fixed volume of silicone gel, and an outer lumen filled during the operation with a fixed volume of saline through a valve;

* Double lumen implant with: an outer lumen prefilled by the manufacturer with a fixed volume of silicone gel, and an inner lumen that is filled during the operation with saline through a valve;

The decision about which type of breast implant you go with should be made with your Doctor.  Most doctors typically use one or two of the types listed above.  It is important to research the different types on your own prior to meeting with your Surgeon so that you know what questions to ask.

While many women see breast augmentation as a simple procedure, it is still surgery where anaesthesia is used.  Therefore, you must understand there are certain risks associated with breast implant surgery.  There are potential side effects of the breast implants themselves, along with risks involved during the surgery itself.  Your doctor should provide you with a detailed explanation of the risks.  If your Doctor does not then you should not see this doctor again.
